Old shelving

We are having new shelving fitted in the Farm Shop this week, so apologies if it is a little confusing if the goodies that you are looking for are not in their usual place! Things should be back to normal next week, with our produce clearly displayed on our new shelving.

First, here is some additional information regarding stock for Christmas orders. Fresh turkeys can be ordered up to 24lb in weight (approx 11 kilo). Chicken is available from 5-10lb, goose 8-14lb, and duck 4-7lb. If you are unsure what size of bird to order, we are happy to make suggestions according to how many people you are planning to feed.

Our butcher now stocks us with oven ready fresh English pheasants. Additionally, our special “Christmas recipe” pork sausage meat has made a return, available in our freezer cabinets.

This is also a good time to mention our regular supply of “alternative meats” from Kezie Foods. We stock burgers and sausages in the following flavours: ostrich, kangaroo, wild boar with apple, and wild boar with honey and thyme. They each offer exciting alternative tastes, as well as health benefits. For example, ostrich is a red meat that is low in fat and can be used in traditional red meat dishes.

It’s less than 8 weeks until Christmas, and we are now taking orders for the festive period. If you would like to order your Christmas fruit, vegetables, meat and groceries from us then please speak to a member of staff in the shop or email us with the details of your order.

We are happy to prepare a box of fresh produce for you to collect on a day convenient to you, right upto Christmas Eve. Besides all our usual stock, our butcher can provide fresh turkey, turkey crowns, goose, duck, topside beef, smoked gammon, capon and more. Price per kilo is to be confirmed, but as soon as we have those details we will include them on this website.

To place a Christmas order by email, we would require the following information:

Your full name and a contact telephone number
Your list of order requirements (meat, fruit, veg, groceries etc)
The day that you would like to collect the order (payment is taken on collection)

Your email order can be sent to: info@southbournefarmshop.co.uk

We will have a Christmas page added to this website soon, with more details regarding ordering, our Christmas stock, our opening hours over the festive period, and more.

This is a good time of year for potatoes, with a variety available to choose from. The latest arrival is Marfona potatoes, grown locally. With a smooth waxy texture, Marfona are popular for boiling, and an excellent choice as a baking potato.

King Edward potatoes are more floury rather than waxy; a good potato for creamy mash, roasting, or for making chips. Its white skin with spots of pink colouration make it an easy potato to identify.

A superb versatile potato that has recently been added to our shelves is Melody (particularly recommended for mash). We also still stock the locally grown Wilja potatoes, an excellent all-rounder from Chidham. Very soon now we will have the local red Desiree potatoes available.

All the above potatoes can be purchased in small amounts in our shop, or as a full sack.

October is upon us, and so are the pumpkins. They are grown locally in Chidham. Sizes vary, so we should have the perfect one for you.

It’s been a wet August, but with a few consecutive dry days in September, we were finally able to begin hay making (above). Chris Bulbeck (and his father before him) have been making hay each summer for fifty years, and in all those years haymaking has never been as late in the year as it has been in 2008, thanks to one of the wettest summers on record. Nevertheless, after several days of hard work, approximately 2000 bales of quality hay have been harvested from 20 acres of land in Southbourne and Hambrook, and are now available to buy in our Farm Shop!

Local produce

Autumn brings a healthy selection of locally produced fruit and veg to the Farm Shop. Our current range includes Wilja and Javelin potatoes, corn on the cob, purple sprouting, brocolli, sprouts (loose and on-the-stick) and a variety of apples.

… which will be updated regularly with details of new products at the shop, including seasonal changes to our fresh local fruit and veg ranges. It’s early days for this new website at the moment, but there will be additional features added over the coming weeks, which will hopefully prove interesting reading! The links at the top of the page provide more information on the shop, such as our range of produce, where to find us, and a brief history of our 26 year old shop.
